Reflexology has been used for many centuries, but only in the 19th century reflexology has made its re appearance in holistic health. Modem medicine began to recognize its benefits, & several medical authorities did further research to study, refine and reestablish it, as the art we know now. Reflexology is based on the principle that pressure points on the body correspond to every gland, organ and body parts. These reflex points are centered or associated with the nerve endings in the feet, hands, and (to a lesser degree) the face. Proper stimulation of these points can contribute to sound health and well being. The most common theory is that applying pressure to the reflex points on the feet and bands stimulate receptors below the skin: Applying stimulus to the associated neurons causes involuntary contraction and relaxation of all parts of the body. This increases the energy· flow via the nervous and circulatory system.

Another theory is that when applied to the feet, reflexology may aid in carrying impulse along the vertical zones of the feet to and from the arch (energy and gravity). Thus it is also known as the zone therapy.
